This map describes the region of Mesopotamia. The region is situated in the Middle-East, in present day Iran.
When looking at this map, you first might have noticed the two rivers snaking through the area. These are the Tigris and Euphrates: the lifeblood of the region. Nothing would have been possible without the fertility that the rivers imparted to the soils in the region. In fact, Mesopotamia was part of the area known as "The Fertile Crescent"
The rivers allowed the people of this region to practice agriculture - the first step to becoming a civilization. Agriculture necessitated irrigation, which called for interdependence between several small communities, leading to complex political structures. This, among other factors, eventually led to the development of cities and civilizations.

There were many civilizations to inhabit the area, as this fertile land was well-situated and in high demand. The land was very prone to outside invasion, since there were not many natural borders to impede progress of invaders. Additionally, rebellion and unrest contributed to changes in rule. The different groups to rule the area were as follows:
SUMERIANS: 3200-2350 BCE
AKKADIANS: 2370-2150 BCE
BABYLONIANS: 1792-1600 BCE
ASSYRIANS: 1300-621 BCE
NEO-BABYLONIANS (CHALDEANS): 600-550 BCE
